A large engraved Victorian sterling silver back and front locket on a sterling silver book chain with matching engraving. The locket contains one removable photo frame, the other frame is missing. The back of the locket is engraved EJ Carter Nov 2 1878. The locket is made from solid sterling silver on the front and the back with silver plated metal bail and inside edges and hinge, this was a common way of constructing lockets at the time.
The locket and chain are not hallmarked, but the chain acid tests as sterling silver and the locket acid tests as sterling silver back and front. There are a few slight dents to the chain and a small dent to the side of the locket.There is some wear to the silver plating on the bail, otherwise in good condition. The locket measures 5 cms, excluding the bail by 4 cms (2 inches x 1 5/8 inches). The chain is 48 cms (19 inches) long excluding the clasp.
