This rare Victorian piece is delicately formed in the shape of a poppy, which symbolizes peace and eternal sleep. It is is coated on the front with a black matte wash and accented in the center by thin golden stamen (which are too fragile to scratch test for gold purity). The back of one petal is stamped STERLING.
This piece has a couple of unique features which date it to the mid- to late- 1800's. It is secured by a unique tube clasp and tube hinge pin, found in some European brooches. The petals are soldered around a circular ring, with smaller loops that may be used to string on a chain or ribbon.
There is a smaller 2-tube bale with tiny holes through which to thread a fine chain or pin. Piece has some wear around the edges, a couple of shiny spots on the surface enamel, and general fine surface scratches. The stamen have flattened over time. The back has a heavy patina consistent with its advanced age. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog.
