You're looking at my fantastic monkeys brooch. This is the genuine Victorian ones dating from around 1850s; not the reproduction ones that you see so many of!!
You can tell the difference in the quality of the monkeys and the stamp on the back of the monkey sat on the bar. The reproduction ones don't have the stamp and the difference in quality is vast. The monkeys are sterling silver and studded with clear pastes on the body and green pastes for eyes. The bar the monkey's sat on tests as 15ct but looks much higher like 18ct.
It is finished with a pearl at each end. The chain the second monkey hangs from is also 15ct gold. This is a lovely quality thing. Which is why there's so many reproductions made, very sought after. Good antique condition- one of the pastes on the hanging monkey's knee is chipped but it doesn't detract from this cute little brooch in my opinion.
Measurements (H x W x D): Monkey and bar: 2.1 x 3.7 x 1.1 cm OR 0.8 x 1.5 x 0.4 inches. Hanging monkey: 3.0 x 1.4 x 0.6 cm OR 1.2 x 0.6 x 0.2 inches.Length of hanging chain: 3.3 cm OR 1.3 inches. Weight (together): 9.12 grams.
