Description: This absolutely stunning sterling silver and black agate locket (ca1880) is one of a kind! I have never seen something like it before. I bought it in France and brought it back to the states with me. The silver was tested positive for sterling silver. Agate has been in use for much longer than its name, as the stone has been found at ancient sites that date beyond the Bronze Age, all over the world.
Victorians brought agate into popularity in jewelry. In the mid-1800s it was all the rage to have agates set into pendants, earrings, rings, etc. This piece could have been part of the mourning period outfit as it is black with only hints of white. Measurements: The locket is about 3/4 inches in diameter and is a tad smaller than a quarter (please see photos). Condition: There are no marks and it has been acid tested. As this locket is quite old it has some surface wear please examine photos carefully. The hinge of the locket has a little wiggle, but is secure. The bail is a bit worn down, and is secure. All any every offer is are welcome. Your offer might not be accepted, but I certainly will not be offended or get mean.
